The burpee.

The burpee is maybe one of the simplest and most brutal training methods that you will ever do. To perform a burpee you simply stand in place, drop to your chest, get back to your feet and then jump off the ground and put your hands in the air. That is one burpee.

The beautiful thing about the burpee is that you can do an infinite variety of rep schemes, work them into a training circuit, or whatever tickles your fancy. Not to mention that you can do them anywhere that there is ground, you don’t need any special equipment, and they are easily one of the best conditiong exercises in existence.

There are ultimately two major components to rugby fitness and that is being able to run and being able to physically move bodies (your own and others) in tackles, mauls, rucks, etc. Running will get you in great shape for running, but you need something else to condition the other half of the equation, and there is no better exercise than burpees for solving that other half.
